The operational problem
Decentralized desalination changes the maintenance equation.
A centralized plant has staff on site. A small-to-medium desalination installation — serving a community, an island, a coastal property, an off-grid facility — does not. The plant runs unattended for weeks at a time. Water quality must remain within standard. Equipment must keep operating. And when something starts to drift, someone needs to know before the water becomes unsafe.
The traditional answer is scheduled site visits. Drive out, check the readings, adjust what's drifting, leave. It works until it doesn't — usually when an alarm condition develops between visits and is discovered too late.

The Ålön installation — a reference installation, not a pilot
Since 2022, the platform has operated a brackish-water desalination plant on the Swedish island of Ålön, supplying drinking water year-round to approximately 50 properties. The plant runs through Swedish winters and summer peak demand on the same infrastructure.

This is the only desalination installation running on the platform today. It is also the longest-running deployment in the most demanding environment, serving real users on critical drinking water infrastructure. We treat that specificity as a strength, not a limitation — the platform has been operationally validated where the consequences of failure are real.
Why this scales — architecture is not size-dependent
The platform was developed for a small installation because that's where the operational pressure was highest — a small plant cannot absorb a single failure without affecting drinking water supply. The same architecture, the same monitoring layer, the same alert and control mechanisms apply identically to a plant ten or a hundred times larger.
